In Microsoft Word 2016 for Windows, Alt+* is a shortcut key for adding an equation.

However, there is no separate key for * on my laptop keyboard.I have to use Shift+8 to insert '*', yetAlt+Shift+8 does not work for adding an equation.

Use commands on a ribbon with the keyboard. To move to the list of ribbon tabs, press Alt; to go directly to a tab, press a keyboard shortcut. To move into the ribbon, press the Down Arrow key. To move between commands, press the Tab key or Shift+Tab.
